A square watermelon isn’t just interesting to look at, they have another benefit. Square watermelons are much easier to store and they do not roll around and fall out of the fridge anymore. Pretty genius, don’t you think?

Here is the explanation as to how square watermelons are grown, that’s so simple that you can easily follow it:

Step 1

The first step is locating a spot that gets a lot of direct sunlight. The soil the plant is put in should always be warm and needs to have a steady supply of water. In colder climates, the seeds should be started indoors and moved outside once it’s warm enough.

Step 2

Watermelon seeds should be planted in groups. The distance between them shouldn’t be too large. This makes it easier on you as well because watermelons need a lot of water. They should be watered well regularly, at least twice a week. For faster growth mulch is a cheap and organic alternative that supplies the plants with nutrients.

Step 3

Once the plants have started to carry their fruit, a square box is added. The box should have glass sides so that the sunlight can still reach the watermelons. The glass works like a greenhouse and stores the heat, making the melons grow even faster. It is important to make sure, there is plenty of airflow in the box too though.

Now if you think square is just as boring as round, you can essentially choose any shape you want. How about a heart-shaped watermelon? A star-shaped one?

Within 80 to 100 days the watermelon can be harvested. Until then it is important to make sure the plant gets plenty of water. It isn’t called watermelon for no reason after all.

In the video, you can find an even more detailed explanation of how to grow shaped watermelons in a step-by-step-guide.
